Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures First Trophy in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been earned on hard courts
A comeback the Russian player won his first title for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament final.
The athlete, a former top-ranked player, has had a challenging period, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.
The player's varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in specific - resulted in him falling of the elite rankings and finally parting ways with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently working with his coach and his other coach, he has consistently improved in the past month - culminating in a hard-fought three-set triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
It is his maiden trophy since the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt since March of 2023.
The win also indicates he has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one different events.
"It's the first time I have attended a event with my two daughters at once, so to get a championship is really nice," commented world number 14 Medvedev.
"This championship is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my child her name was born was for her."
The athlete, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six finals, featuring in that event previously this season.
Medvedev's defensive strategy and frequent reactions on the tennis court had prompted observers to doubt if his ability to perform at the highest level was finished.
Yet the player has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and perform positively, backed up by an better service.
The champion fought back from a deficit in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, taking four of the last five games to gain the advantage.
Both players traded breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden tour championship, took control to force a decider.
Moutet rescued 4 early break points in a tight final set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to secure the win.
Appropriately, he earned the win with a point at the front of the court, with Moutet unable to control a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
